Oh Soul, be Silent
SATB, 5'45" (2016)
Upon seeing this poem by Rumi posted by some anxiety-ridden person in cyberspace, I felt I had no choice but to set it. After all, what person (what creative person in particular) cannot relate to this, myself wholeheartedly included? The consistent repetition in the text mirrored the anxiety so many of us feel frequently, and I have tried to use that to capture the frenetic energy of a mind gone off the railings in my setting. However, as with Rumi’s text, the music feels moments of peace as well, finally silencing itself in the end.
